Main Library of Tampere City Library, Public library in central Tampere, Finland
The Main Library of Tampere City Library is a public library in downtown Tampere, spread across three floors. It offers reading and work areas, computer stations, meeting rooms, exhibition spaces, and a cafe open to all.
The building was designed in the 1980s following an international architecture competition. The winning design drew inspiration from artistic impressions the architect gathered during travels in Ireland.
The library serves residents and visitors from across Tampere as a gathering place for people of all ages and backgrounds. Its collections reflect the diversity of the community and encourage exchange between different cultures.
Entry is free and staff can assist visitors in languages other than Finnish. Printers, scanners, and wireless internet are available throughout the building.
Seen from above, the building's outline resembles a capercaillie bird, which gave it its popular nickname among locals. The exterior mixes granite, copper, and glass in a way that changes how it looks depending on the light.
