Villa Ervi, Private residence in Kuusisaari, Helsinki, Finland.

Villa Ervi is a two-story residence in Kuusisaari with a basement, concrete and steel framework, and extensive glazing facing the sea. A separate sauna building with iroko wood cladding, an outdoor swimming pool, and spacious garden areas surround the main house.

Architect Aarne Ervi designed and built this family home in 1951. In 1962, an office wing was added that extended the design approach of the original structure.

The house blends Finnish design principles with Japanese aesthetics, visible in the material choices and the carefully shaped landscape around it. The garden composition shows this cultural exchange and shapes how the entire property feels.

The waterfront location and window placement mean casual footwear works best for exploring the garden and outdoor areas. Plan time for a slow walk through the different garden zones to take in the layout.

The garden holds Finland's largest Japanese maple tree, which shapes the property through every season. Inside, original oak cabinetry and handmade Italian tiles from the construction period show detailed craftsmanship throughout.
