Mustankallio water tower, Water tower in Kiveriö district, Lahti, Finland.
Mustankallio is a water tower standing 50 meters tall in the Kiveriö district, built with pre-stressed concrete and covered with asbestos cement on the outside. It holds two drinking water reservoirs with a combined capacity of 1,020,000 liters, with mineral wool insulation to prevent freezing.
Built in 1963 by a local company, the structure was originally called Metelinmäki Water Tower and designed by Ing. Büro Paavo Simula and Company. This design reflected the engineering practices of the postwar period in Finland.
The tower includes a meeting room and sauna on its upper level, reflecting how Finnish communities create social spaces in functional buildings. These amenities show the local practice of combining everyday infrastructure with gathering places.
The tower is located in an accessible area of Lahti with views over the surrounding landscape and Lake Vesijärvi below. Access to the interior spaces may be limited, so checking ahead about visiting arrangements is recommended.
The tower's upper section reaches approximately 109 meters above Lake Vesijärvi, making it the highest point visible from much of the surrounding area. This elevation makes it a notable landmark visible from several directions across the city.
