Grand Wintersberg

Grand Wintersberg is a mountain summit in the Northern Vosges reaching about 581 meters in elevation with distinctive sandstone rock formations. A 25-meter observation tower stands at the peak, offering views across the Upper Rhine Plain, the surrounding northern mountains, and extending toward the Black Forest on clear days.

The mountain and surrounding area contain Celtic artifacts indicating ancient settlement in this part of the Vosges. Additionally, a Gallo-Roman sandstone carving found here provides evidence of human activity during the Roman period.

The name Wintersberg reflects the northern mountain landscape where hikers and outdoor enthusiasts have traveled for generations. The mountain refuge nestled on the saddle between the two peaks shows how the region continues its long tradition of mountain activities and gatherings.

The observation tower at the summit is worth visiting on clear days when visibility extends far across the landscape. Good footwear is advisable as the sandstone terrain can become slippery when wet, so plan accordingly for a comfortable climb.

A Gallo-Roman sandstone carving called Liese resembles a sphinx and sits on the mountain, making it a rare artistic artifact from ancient times. This distinctive stone sculpture sparks curiosity about the craftspeople who created it during the Roman era.
