Devil's Bridge, Historical bridge in Montoulieu and Mercus-Garrabet, France
The Devil's Bridge spans the Ariège River with a single high arch and features fortified structures on both banks of the waterway.
The bridge was constructed in 1836 by entrepreneur Adolphe Garrigou for his brother-in-law Léo Lamarque, who collaborated with mathematician Jean-Victor Poncelet.
Local folklore tells of a baron making a deal with Satan to build the bridge, outsmarting him by sending a cat across first to claim its soul.
The structure connects Montoulieu to the right bank of the Ariège River and received restoration work in 1946 to repair corbelled elements and walls.
The bridge served as an experimental site for Léo Lamarque to test his water wheel invention, combining engineering innovation with architectural purpose.
