Castellaras de la Malle

Castellaras de la Malle is an Iron Age fortified settlement perched on a highland plateau at approximately 1,200 meters elevation with stone walls constructed for defense. The enclosure features two main gateways and contains internal structures that subdivided the settlement into distinct zones.

This settlement originated during the Iron Age and gained official protection as a classified historical monument in 1909, recognizing its archaeological importance. Its elevated location allowed inhabitants to control and observe the surrounding terrain during that era.

Evidence of ancient craft production was uncovered during excavations, revealing tools and processing remains scattered across the site. These discoveries suggest that residents engaged in metalwork and the processing of local materials as part of their daily work.

The site can be reached by a walking trail from Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey and is accessible without special equipment. The exposed plateau terrain can be windy, so weatherproof clothing and sturdy footwear are recommended for your visit.

The walls feature large stone blocks stacked precisely without mortar, demonstrating exceptional durability and ancient engineering skill. This construction method allowed the structure to withstand weathering for more than two thousand years.
