Musée de la Guerre de 1870 et de l'Annexion

The museum in Gravelotte focuses on the Franco-Prussian War and is housed in a building on the site of former fighting. Its collections contain weapons, photographs, documents, and battle reconstructions that trace the main events of the conflict.

The collection began in 1875, shortly after the 1870-1871 war, to preserve the events of the conflict. Over the following decades, survivors and families contributed additional objects and accounts that expanded the holdings.

The exhibits show personal belongings of soldiers from both sides, such as uniforms, letters, and everyday items that reveal how individuals experienced the war. Walking through these displays helps visitors understand the human side of the conflict.

The building sits in a quiet village location and is accessible on foot or by car without difficulty. Visitors should plan to spend several hours to view all the exhibits at a comfortable pace.

A distinctive memorial hall in the building was inaugurated by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1905. This space reflects how both nations chose to honor those affected by the 1870 conflict after years of distance.
