Viaduc de la ligne b du métro de Rennes, Metro viaduct in Cesson-Sévigné and Rennes, France

The Rennes metro Line B viaduct is a 2,395-meter concrete structure resting on 70 support pillars and connecting three elevated stations. It was assembled from 973 precast segments and rises above residential and urban areas, creating clear sightlines across the surroundings.

Construction began in May 2016 and was completed in June 2021, advancing the expansion of Rennes public transit infrastructure. The opening marked a turning point for regional mobility, establishing new connections between previously separated city districts.

The structure connects the Beaulieu university campus with the Rennes Atalante technology district, bridging academic and professional spaces. Daily commuters use the elevated stations to move between these two centers, making it part of their routine.

Passengers can board or exit at three elevated stations: Beaulieu-Université in the south, Atalante in the center, and Cesson-Viasilva in the north. The elevated position of the stations requires stairs or elevators for access, so travelers should consider these entry points.

The viaduct uses specially designed Y-shaped and X-shaped pillars to handle the curves of the route and maintain stability. These varied pillar forms are an engineering solution that becomes apparent when looking up from below.
