Tel Aviv Zoo, Former zoo in central Tel Aviv, Israel.
The Tel Aviv Zoo was a zoological facility in central Tel Aviv that allowed residents and visitors access to different animal species. The grounds included several enclosures, educational areas, and pathways that ran through the site.
Rabbi Dr. Mordecai Schornstein founded the facility in 1938 after moving from Copenhagen to Tel Aviv and initially operating a pet shop. The animals were relocated to the Zoological Center Tel Aviv-Ramat Gan in 1980, which led to the closure of the site.
The name honors Rabbi Dr. Mordecai Schornstein, who designed the grounds as a place for education and encounters with wildlife. Families often came on weekends to walk between the enclosures and observe the animals up close.
The former grounds are located centrally in Tel Aviv and are now used for other purposes. Visitors interested in zoological facilities can find the successor institution at the Zoological Center Tel Aviv-Ramat Gan.
The flamingo breeding program at the facility gained international recognition during the late sixties and seventies. Several chicks were successfully raised and contributed to the preservation of the species.
