Mau district, Administrative district in Azamgarh division, Uttar Pradesh, India

Mau district covers around 1,700 square kilometers in southeastern Uttar Pradesh and shares boundaries with five neighboring districts. The region includes numerous villages and Mau town, which serves as the administrative center.

Human settlements existed in this area roughly 1.500 years ago, showing traces of early occupation. The Nats tribe later established roots along the Tamsa River, leaving their mark on the region's development.

Hindu and Muslim communities shape daily life through their distinct festivals, foods, and social customs that remain visible throughout the district. These practices continue to define how people gather, celebrate, and share meals in their neighborhoods.

The district is divided into four assembly constituencies, which helps visitors navigate different areas and regions. Starting from the administrative center makes it easier to explore surrounding villages and communities.

Artisans create Sadiya silk sarees using traditional handloom methods, a craft inherited from settlers with roots in Iran, Afghanistan, and Turkey. These intricately woven textiles represent a centuries-old tradition that remains alive in local villages.
