Zar Khezer Khan Castle

Zar Khezer Khan Castle, Heritage castle in Ahram, Iran.

Zar Khezer Khan Castle is a fortified ruin near Ahram in Tangestan County, rising from a hilltop location. Built from stone, adobe bricks, and mud with decorative plaster surfaces, the tower reaches about 6 meters in height and 5.5 meters in width.

This structure dates to the Qajar period, when such towers were commonly built as defensive outposts or residences for regional leaders. It received official protection as Iranian National Heritage in 1998.

The name Zar Khezer Khan refers to a regional leader from the area and shapes local identity. The way visitors interact with the ruin today shows how deeply this structure connects to the region's story.

The site sits on a hilltop northwest of Ahram and is best reached on foot, with sturdy shoes recommended for uneven terrain. The ruin stands fairly exposed, so bring water and sun protection if visiting during hot weather.

The original complex covered roughly 3,400 square meters, revealing that multiple structures once surrounded the central tower. This larger layout suggests the site held greater importance than the single surviving ruin might initially suggest.
