Crecchio, Medieval hilltop commune in Province of Chieti, Italy

Crecchio is a medieval hilltop commune in the Province of Chieti surrounded by rolling landscape with olive groves and vineyards. The settlement sits along the Arielli river valley at approximately 208 meters elevation, with a castle standing as its central landmark.

The castle at Crecchio dates from the 12th century and served as a defensive stronghold for the region. During World War II, it provided temporary refuge to King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy.

The museum inside the castle displays objects from Byzantine and medieval times that show how people lived in this region. These artifacts help visitors understand the daily life and beliefs of past inhabitants.

The town can be reached via the SS 538 road from Ortona or through the A14 motorway exit, with the center located roughly 33 kilometers from Chieti. Public facilities and amenities are modest but adequate for a brief visit.

The castle houses an extensive collection of Etruscan objects discovered from earlier excavations in the surrounding area. These findings show that the territory was inhabited long before the Middle Ages arrived.
