Soncino

Soncino is a medieval town in Cremona province whose center is encircled by a complete stone wall with square and round towers. The fortified structure displays the military architecture of that era with its strategic defensive features.

The Sforza fortress was built in 1473 and served territorial control through its strategic location. This fortification was part of the expansion policy of the powerful Sforza family in Lombardy.

The printing craft shaped Soncino's identity deeply—the town became known as a center for Hebrew book art. The printer workshops attracted learned people and made the place a meeting point for intellectual life.

The town is best explored on foot, as the narrow lanes and pathways are not suited for cars. Visitors should bring comfortable footwear to handle the hilly topography and cobblestone streets with ease.

In 1488, a printer's workshop here produced the first complete Hebrew Bible—a work that stirred attention in the world at that time. This achievement made Soncino an important center of book printing and drew scholars and craftspeople.
