San Benedetto Po

San Benedetto Po sits between the Po and Lirone rivers and features a monumental monastery complex with three distinct cloisters and a basilica designed by Giulio Romano. The compound includes carefully arranged spaces that reflect the religious and architectural importance of the site.

Polirone Abbey was founded in 1007 by Count Tedaldo of Canossa and maintained close ties with the monasteries of Cluny and Montecassino. It was later closed following Napoleon's orders, marking the end of its religious role.

The Polironiano Civic Museum displays extensive collections of regional objects, farming tools, and historical documents that reflect local heritage.

The monastery's sixteenth-century cellars hold a notable collection of traditional carts that document earlier transport methods. The monastic refectory displays frescos by Girolamo Bonsignori and Correggio depicting religious scenes.
