Melito di Porto Salvo, Coastal municipality in Calabria, Italy
Melito di Porto Salvo is a municipality along the Ionian coast within the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria in southern Calabria. The town runs along the Riviera dei Gelsomini and stretches from low hills down to the seafront.
Giuseppe Garibaldi landed with his troops at Rumbolo Beach in August 1860 and launched from here the campaign for Italian unification. This moment connected the town to a turning point in national history.
The name Porto Salvo refers to devotion to the Madonna di Porto Salvo, who was believed to protect sailors arriving along this coast. This name reflects the centuries-long connection between the town and the sea.
The town is located around 25 kilometers southeast of Reggio Calabria and can be reached by coastal roads. Visitors will find several accommodations and can explore both the seafront and the nearby mountain villages from here.
The territory includes Pentedattilo, a restored mountain village built of stone that is now inhabited by craftspeople and artists. The abandoned houses were gradually renovated and now offer workshops and living spaces among old walls.
