Palazzo di città, Town hall and palace in Borgo Antico, Taranto, Italy
Palazzo di città is an administrative building with four corner towers in the old town, featuring a neoclassical facade with a central clock facing the main square. The structure combines defensive design elements with dignified architecture, commanding a central position in the urban fabric.
The building was constructed between 1864 and 1869 by architect Davide Conversano, replacing the earlier residence of the Spanish military governor. This new structure represented part of Taranto's urban modernization in the 19th century.
The palace serves as the seat of city government, and its grand rooms with high ceilings and ornate details reflect the importance of civic life in the historic center. These spaces host public gatherings and mark the social heart of the old town.
The building sits at Piazza Castello and serves as an easy landmark to find in the old town, accessible on foot. Some interior areas may have restricted access depending on municipal activities or official events.
A vaulted passage known as the Governor's Arch runs through the entire structure and creates a hidden connection between the main square and the ancient district. This underground corridor was once strategically important and is often missed by visitors.
