Castle Payrsberg

Castle Payrsberg is a medieval fortress in the hills west of Nals that overlooks the Sirmian River gorge. The structure displays Gothic architecture with solid stone walls and features a tall defensive tower.

The Payr family built this fortress in the 13th century while serving as officials under the Counts of Eppan, a powerful regional family. The construction reflects how nobles in South Tyrol developed their strongholds during this period.

The name Payrsberg comes from the family that once ruled this place and left their mark on it. Visitors can see the family crests carved into the walls, showing how important this location was to the local noble family.

The path to the castle is marked and starts in Nals following signpost number 9. The walk takes about an hour and climbs steeply uphill, so proper footwear is recommended.

Today the castle is used by the Malpaga family as a residence and workplace, with traditional farm buildings integrated into the historic structure. This makes the place a living example of how medieval fortresses continue to serve practical purposes.
