Reichenberg Castle

Reichenberg is a castle ruin perched on a steep hillside in the Münstertal valley at approximately 1500 meters elevation. Its massive stone structure sits strategically to overlook the valley and the main routes that pass through it.

The castle was built in the early Middle Ages and initially controlled by the bishops of Chur. By the 12th century, a local baron took command and used it as a base for regional power.

The ruins show how medieval people defended this mountain valley and controlled the routes through it. The stone walls and tower reflect the importance of such strongholds in shaping daily life in the region.

The castle is reached by hiking trails starting from a parking area at the beginning of Taufers im Münstertal village. The climb is steep, so sturdy footwear and a couple of hours should be set aside for the visit.

This fortress was part of a two-castle defense system alongside nearby Castle Rotund, allowing complete control of valley access. Both strongholds worked together as a coordinated network rather than operating independently.
