Salegg Castle

Salegg is a castle positioned on a hillside above Seis am Schlern with stone walls and a defensive rampart overlooking the surroundings. The structure displays typical medieval fortress features including bastions and fortification lines that protected the territory below.

The castle was built in the 13th century as a noble residence and defensive stronghold for territorial control in the region. It later passed under the administration of the Diocese of Bolzano-Brixen, where it remains under their care today.

The location bears traces of medieval rule that shaped the valley's development. It stands as a reminder of how religious and secular powers worked together in shaping this region for centuries.

The castle is reachable via marked hiking trails starting from the village of Seis am Schlern that provide access to the site. The paths are well-maintained and clearly marked, making them suitable for a half-day excursion.

Local legend tells of an underground passage linking this stronghold to nearby Hauenstein Castle, supposedly protecting hidden treasures. This tale has survived through generations and adds a layer of mystery to visits to the hilltop ruins.
