St Mark's Clocktower, Renaissance clock tower in San Marco, Italy
The tower rises over 100 feet tall, featuring a monumental archway that leads into the Merceria central street of Venice at Piazza San Marco.
Construction began in 1496 under architect Mauro Codussi, with the original clock mechanism created by Gian Paolo and Gian Carlo Ranieri, including a bell from 1497.
Two bronze figures at the top, referred to as the Moors due to their patina, strike a large bell hourly while the Three Magi emerge during specific holidays.
Tours through the internal structure require advance booking through Museo Correr, with groups between 2 and 12 people permitted to climb the narrow stairs.
The clock displays both Roman numerals for hours and Arabic numerals for minutes, with a golden pointer indicating time against a zodiac background.
