Piana di Sant'Eufemia

The Piana di Sant'Eufemia is an alluvial plain in central Calabria that spreads across a wide, flat terrain touching the coast. Several rivers and streams, including the Amato and Angitola, continuously flow through this lowland and keep it well-watered for farming.

The plain was originally a swampland that was transformed through large-scale drainage in the early 1900s. Systematic reclamation starting in 1922 fundamentally reshaped the landscape and made it suitable for intensive farming.

This plain has shaped local life for centuries through farming that sustains families and communities. Vineyards, olive groves, and citrus orchards are woven into the daily rhythm of the people who work the land.

The area is best explored during morning or evening hours when heat is less intense and rural activities are most visible. Visitors should be prepared for unpaved paths and wear sturdy shoes suitable for walking through fields.

Within the plain lie the Caronte thermal springs, known since ancient times and still flowing from the ground today. These geothermal sources reveal that the earth beneath the flat surface remains active and dynamic.
