Scampia, Residential quarter in northern Naples, Italy
Scampia is a residential quarter in northern Naples, part of the eighth municipality. The area spreads across several blocks with apartment buildings, public squares and facilities serving residents.
Until the 1960s, the area was a small rural settlement on the city edge. Large-scale construction with new housing started in the 1970s and changed the appearance completely.
The name comes from the old village that once stood among fields and small farmhouses. Today you see schools and community centers used by families from across the neighborhood.
The quarter sits about 7 km (4 miles) from the historic center of Naples and is well connected by public transport. Those walking through the streets should visit during daytime and use main routes.
In some parts you still find traces of the old fields and paths that recall the earlier rural landscape. The new university building has given the quarter a different face in recent years.
