Mapei Stadium - Città del Tricolore, Multi-purpose stadium in Reggio Emilia, Italy

Mapei Stadium – Città del Tricolore is a multi-purpose venue on the northeastern edge of Reggio Emilia with more than 21,000 seats and a standard grass pitch. The stands are covered and offer good views of the field, while a rectangular moat surrounds the playing surface and gives spectators a clear separation between audience and turf.

The venue opened in 1995 as the first privately funded football stadium in Italy, after more than 1,000 supporters purchased long-term season tickets. The original name was Stadio Giglio, named after the local lily emblem, before the current designation was officially adopted in 2012.

The second part of its name recalls that Reggio Emilia adopted the Italian tricolor as an official flag in 1797. The stadium has carried this designation since 2012, linking local football to an important moment in national history.

The complex sits on the city outskirts and is best reached by car or taxi, while buses provide extra connections on match days. The shopping center I Petali next to the venue has several restaurants and shops open outside event days, offering a convenient option for meals or browsing.

A rectangular moat separates spectators from the turf and was originally conceived as a security measure to prevent unauthorized access to the playing surface. This solution is rarely seen in European football venues and gives the place a distinctive appearance that surprises many visitors.
