Necropolis of Mandra Antine

Necropolis of Mandra Antine is an archaeological site with four underground tombs carved into the trachyte rock of a hillside and oriented toward the south-southeast. The tombs vary in their layout, with some chambers featuring decorative elements and painted designs.

The site dates to the Late Neolithic period and was documented through archaeological research in the mid-20th century. This research provided important insights into the burial practices of these early people.

The third tomb shows colorful paintings with religious symbols linked to life cycles, with a central hearth surrounded by concentric circles. These images reveal what the people who were buried here believed and valued.

To reach the site, head from Thiesi on SS131 toward Ittiri and then follow SP 50 until you find the parking area near the entrance path. Bring sturdy shoes and water, as the hillside location can be exposed to sun and wind.

The first tomb features a semicircular antechamber carefully carved into the rock with two pilasters leading to the main chamber. This architectural detail reveals surprising craftsmanship for such an early underground burial structure.
