Thurn Castle, Medieval castle in San Martin de Tor, Italy.
Thurn Castle is a stone fortress perched on a hilltop in San Martin de Tor with circular walls and marble portals built across multiple periods. The structure combines architectural styles that show how the building evolved over centuries.
The castle originated in medieval times under the control of the Lords of Tyrol until their line ended in 1253 with the last member. Following this transition, power shifted away and the stronghold gradually lost its central importance.
The chapel displays Gothic frescoes and holds early glass painting works that reflect medieval religious artistry in the Tyrolean region. These pieces show how people expressed their faith through visual art during that time.
Access is through a walking path from San Martin de Tor village, taking about 30 minutes and climbing through forested terrain. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for varying trail conditions along the route.
Since 2003 it operates as Museum Ladin Ćiastel de Tor, displaying objects that tell the story of the local Ladin community and their heritage. This museum is one of the few places where you can explore the specific identity of this mountain people.
