Trostburg, Medieval castle and military museum in Ponte Gardena, Italy
Trostburg is a medieval castle perched on a hillside above Valle Isarco valley, now housing a museum with regional exhibitions and displays. The building features thick defensive walls, marble portals, and multiple rooms spread across several levels.
The castle was first mentioned in 1173 and served as a residence and administrative center for a local family. The Earls of Wolkenstein-Trostburg governed the property for over 600 years before it eventually changed hands.
The interior rooms show how noble families lived and decorated their spaces over the centuries. Visitors can see ornate ceilings and painted walls that reflect the tastes and customs of those who once ruled here.
Access to the castle involves a roughly 15-minute uphill walk via the Trostburg Path starting from Ponte Gardena. Guided tours are available from March through October, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended for the climb.
The museum displays around 86 detailed scale models of castles from across South Tyrol of varying sizes. These models provide visitors with a clear overview of the different architectural styles and fortress types found throughout the region.
