Fort San Giovanni

Fort San Giovanni is a military stronghold perched on Becchignolo hill with high crowned walls, a low parapet, and watchtowers at each of the four corners. The fortress overlooks the confluence of the Pora and Aquila river valleys and was built as part of a regional defense network.

Spanish forces built this stronghold between 1640 and 1644 to protect the border region. In the 1800s, the site was converted into a prison before later being restored as a cultural landmark.

The structure displays a blend of medieval walls and Spanish military construction that people can still see today. This mix of building styles tells the story of how different powers controlled and modified the fort over time.

Access is easiest via Strada Beretta in Finalborgo, which leads to a walking path up the hillside. Wear comfortable shoes since the climb to the top is steep and the terrain is uneven in places.

The fort served as a women's prison in the 1800s, revealing a lesser-known chapter in the site's history. This unexpected use shows how military buildings were repurposed for entirely different functions over time.
