The Spanish constructed Fort San Giovanni between 1640 and 1644 to strengthen defenses at the junction of Pora and Aquila river valleys.
The fort incorporates elements of medieval architecture, demonstrated by the integration of an ancient tower from the Finalborgo defensive system.
Visitors can reach Fort San Giovanni through Strada Beretta in Finalborgo, with seasonal opening hours and guided tours available throughout the year.
The fortress underwent a transformation from military stronghold to women's prison in 1882, before its complete restoration as a cultural site.
