Aquarium of Alghero, Public aquarium in central Alghero, Italy
The Aquarium of Alghero was a museum for exploring Mediterranean marine life through tanks filled directly with water from the nearby sea. The facility was located centrally in the city and offered an immediate look at the diversity of local underwater life.
The facility began its work near Torre di Sulis and collected marine species from the region. In November 2020 it closed its doors and moved its collection to another aquarium on Sardinia.
The facility introduced visitors to local marine species and their habitats through tanks that brought the underwater world of Alghero's bay directly into view. The displays were arranged so that observing the fish and other sea creatures helped visitors understand the local ecosystems.
The museum building was located in the central zone of Alghero and was easily accessible on foot. Visitors could easily fit it into their city walk and afterward had access to nearby shops and restaurants.
The aquarium's collection housed stonefish, rare and venomous sea dwellers that were seldom seen anywhere in Italy. These specimens made the facility a special place for those who wanted to learn about the more dangerous sides of marine life.
