Visconti-Sforza Castle, Medieval fortress in Galliate, Italy
Visconti-Sforza Castle is a fortress in Galliate, in northern Italy, built on a rectangular plan with four corner towers. The western facade has been altered over the centuries, but the rest of the structure has largely kept its original form.
The Sforza family built this fortress between 1476 and 1496 on the site of an earlier Visconti stronghold. The new construction shifted the character of the place from a feudal residence toward a military fortification.
The south-western section of the castle now houses a public library, with rooms decorated with stucco work and coats of arms from later centuries. These details show how the building was gradually adapted for new uses while keeping traces of its past.
Part of the castle belongs to the municipality, while other sections are in private hands, so not all areas are open to visitors. It is worth checking in advance which parts can be visited, as access and opening times can vary.
The castle is larger than most other Sforza fortifications, which sets it apart from the typical examples of this type of construction. This size was a deliberate choice that points to how much strategic importance Galliate held for the Sforza.
