Forte Cavour

Forte Cavour is a military fort built atop Palmaria Island with heavy stone walls and multiple gun emplacements positioned throughout the structure. The site features underground casemated chambers, a moat, and a drawbridge entrance protecting the main compound.

Construction began in 1857 under the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia as part of a coastal defense strategy for the Ligurian region. The fort was built during a period of military modernization and became an important component of the local fortification network.

The fort shows how 19th-century military engineering shaped everyday life, visible in the thick stone walls, narrow corridors, and gun placements throughout the site. You can see how soldiers once moved through these spaces and managed their daily routines.

You reach the fort via the Sentiero dei Condannati hiking path, which departs from Porto Venere and leads up to Palmaria Island. Wear proper footwear and come prepared for uphill walking, as the trail has steep sections and takes about an hour to reach the top.

The fort was positioned to directly control the approach to Porto Venere harbor, making it a critical lookout point for monitoring maritime activity in the area. From its elevated position on the island, defenders could spot ships approaching from far out at sea.
