Parco naturale delle Lame del Sesia, Regional nature park between Vercelli and Novara, Italy
Parco naturale delle Lame del Sesia is a protected area covering about 830 hectares along the Sesia River, featuring wetlands, swamp formations, and diverse woodland with native oak and ash trees. The landscape displays the typical structure of the Po Valley plain, with numerous water surfaces and lush riverbank zones.
The protected area was officially established in 1978 and brings together multiple nature reserves including Isolone di Oldenico, Garzaia di Villarboit, and Palude di Casalbeltrame. Its creation was part of a broader effort to safeguard the valuable wetland ecosystems of the Po Valley.
The region surrounding the park maintains a long tradition of wine making, particularly near Gattinara, where local vineyards produce wines from native grape varieties.
Visitors can use marked trails throughout the year for birdwatching, nature photography, and guided walks. The park's ornithological museum provides information and background knowledge about the habitats and the species living there.
The wetland hosts roughly 190 bird species, with about 70 nesting there, including gray herons, little egrets, and night herons in large numbers. This remarkable bird diversity makes the area an internationally recognized hotspot for bird watchers.
