Parco regionale dei Sassi di Roccamalatina, Regional park in Province of Modena, Italy.
Parco regionale dei Sassi di Roccamalatina is a regional park covering hills in the Medio Appennino Modenese area, marked by tall sandstone spires that stand out above the surrounding terrain. The landscape includes open grasslands mixed with wooded slopes and small valleys carved by streams.
The area received protected status in 1988 under regional law LR 11, establishing conservation measures for geological formations. The sandstone spires themselves formed over millions of years through water erosion and weathering of ancient rock layers.
Villages within the park contain buildings from the year 1000, including the Church of San Giovanni Battista with Byzantine architectural details. Walking through these settlements, you see how people adapted their homes to the rocky landscape.
Several marked trails run through the park, connecting visitor centers and viewpoint areas. Different routes suit different fitness levels, so check trail descriptions before you start to choose one that matches your ability.
The park contains many plant species that together make up about one third of all plants found in the region. This botanical richness comes from the range of elevations and different soil types that create separate habitats.
