Passo della Sentinella is a mountain pass in the Monti Alburni range, in the Province of Salerno, within the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park. It sits between the peaks of Spina dell'Ausino and Cocuzzo delle Puglie, linking the Vallo di Diano to the Valle del Calore.
The name Sentinella, meaning sentinel or guard in Italian, points to the role this pass once played as a lookout point over the surrounding valleys. Over time, the pass was integrated into state road 166 degli Alburni, making it the highest point along the route connecting two major inland areas.
The pass is accessible by road via state road 166 degli Alburni, with approaches from San Pietro al Tanagro or from Roscigno. Just past the highest point, there is a fountain on the right side of the road where visitors can refill water.
The pass sits within one of the largest protected areas in Italy, a park known for sheltering over 1800 plant species across its varied terrain. On the surrounding high pastures, it is common to see horses and cattle roaming freely, a sight that gives the place a lived-in, rural feel.
