Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Holy Rosary, Minor basilica and shrine in Fontanellato, Italy

The Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Holy Rosary is a baroque structure with a Latin cross layout, one main nave, and four side chapels. The rich interior is filled with paintings displayed on walls and ceilings that enhance the ornamental architectural character of the space.

Construction of the sanctuary took place between 1641 and 1660 in response to the community's need for a dedicated shrine to Mary. The formal inauguration in 1660 established it as a significant center of worship in the region.

The sanctuary is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the Rosary, reflecting the importance of this devotion in the local faith tradition. Visitors can see a living practice of popular piety expressed through the many votive offerings that worshippers have left over generations.

The sanctuary is located west of Parma near the town of Fontanellato and is easily accessible by car from outside the city. Visitors can attend during times when religious services take place, so it is helpful to check opening hours in advance.

During World War II, the adjoining orphanage was temporarily repurposed as a prison before returning to its charitable role after the war. This unusual chapter shows how local buildings were adapted to serve different needs during difficult times.
