Sanctuary of Macereto

The octagonal sanctuary stands at 1000 meters elevation on the Macereto plateau, featuring three entrances and containing a 14th-century chapel within its walls.

Construction began in 1528 under architect Giovan Battista da Lugano, following an earlier design by Donato Bramante, and reached completion in 1556 under Filippo Salvi da Bissone.

The interior walls display frescoes by Simone De Magistris created between 1580 and 1582, depicting stories of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ.

The religious complex includes the main church, the Pilgrim House, the Guard House, and the Palace of Guaite, serving both worship and tourism purposes.

According to records from 1359, mules transporting a wooden statue of Madonna and Child knelt at this location, marking it as the divine choice for the sanctuary.
