Monte Rotondo, Mountain summit in Marche, Italy
Monte Rotondo is a limestone summit in the Sibillini Mountains reaching 2,101 meters, with steep rocky sides and exposed stone formations. The mountain's slopes are open grassland and scree that hikers can navigate via established trails toward the top.
Since medieval times, the mountain has served as a landmark for travelers and local communities navigating the Marche region. Its prominent position made it a natural reference point for guiding people across the landscape.
Shepherds from the valleys below still graze their flocks on these slopes, shaping the landscape as their families have done for generations. This everyday practice keeps old ways of herding alive across the mountainside.
Several trails lead to the summit, with the eastern path offering the easiest grade for less experienced hikers. With basic mountain gear and good preparation, the ascent is manageable for most people without technical climbing skills.
During winter, snow accumulation on the summit creates distinctive circular patterns that match the mountain's name meaning round mountain. These unusual formations become visible from certain angles and angles and make the peak memorable for visitors who climb during colder months.
