Napoli Afragola railway station, High-speed railway station in Afragola, Italy
Napoli Afragola is a high-speed railway station in Afragola, Italy, whose curved shape resembles a wing. The building rises on supports above the tracks and covers the platforms with a long, transparent roof.
Italian railway authorities commissioned architect Zaha Hadid in 2003 to plan the station. After construction delays, the facility opened in June 2017.
The station name combines the nearby major city with the smaller town where the building stands, showing the regional role of the facility. Travelers use the hall as a junction between urban and rural areas, where commuters from several provinces meet on their way to work or home.
The station is located outside the city center and can be reached by regional and local trains. Visitors should allow enough time for connections, as the distances between levels can be longer.
The building uses solar panels, natural ventilation systems, and geothermal temperature control to reduce energy consumption. These techniques lower the need for artificial cooling and heating inside.
