Regoledo funicular

The Regoledo funicular was a rail line that connected the train station below to the Grand Hotel Regoledo above on the shores of Lake Como. The route climbed steeply and covered about 300 meters of elevation gain across a short distance.

The funicular opened in 1890 and carried guests to the well-known hotel until it closed in 1960. During those years it served as a key link for the spa resort business on Lake Como.

The Grand Hotel Regoledo drew artists and writers who used the funicular to reach the station from the slopes above Lake Como. The place reflected the lifestyle of upper-class visitors who came to seek rest and recovery in the late 1800s.

The route was relatively short and could be completed in less than 10 minutes, making it convenient for hotel guests. The system used tanks of water in the carriages to power the machinery.

The system switched in 1903 to rely on gravity and water weight instead of electric power. This change made the slope less steep and represented a clever shift in engineering approach.
