Funivia di Monteviasco

The Funivia di Monteviasco is an aerial cable car that connects the lower settlement of Ponte di Piero with the hilltop village of Monteviasco. The system spans across the steep terrain of the Veddasca Valley to link these two points at different elevations.

The cable car system opened in 1989 to replace a smaller freight lift from the 1970s. It was built to solve the accessibility challenges faced by residents of this remote mountain village.

The cable car serves a mountain community where traditional stone buildings and cobbled paths reflect regional architecture. It links two very different elevations and shapes the daily rhythm of those living here.

The journey takes roughly five minutes in a cabin that holds about 15 passengers. Weather conditions can affect operations, so it is wise to check local conditions before planning your visit.

The system has remained closed since November 2018 following a safety incident. An ancient stone stairway became the sole access route, revealing how critical this lift was for the community.
