Shitamachi Museum

The Shitamachi Museum displays recreated downtown Tokyo streets with walkable homes and shops that visitors can enter. The exhibition spans two floors and shows how people lived in this neighborhood long ago.

The site preserves memories of everyday life for common people in Tokyo from the Edo period through the mid-20th century. Collections were gathered starting in 1980 to save this vanishing world for future generations.

The displayed items show how merchants and craftspeople lived and worked in downtown Tokyo. You can enter the rooms and experience how daily activities unfolded in an earlier era.

The museum sits next to Ueno Park and is easily reached on foot from the station. The rooms are narrow and tight, so allow time to move through and expect to share spaces with other visitors.

Visitors can step into a traditional public bathhouse counter and try vintage telephone booths from the early 1900s. These elements let you sense how people in this area spent their everyday moments back then.
