Shōwa Memorial Park, National government park in Tachikawa, Japan
Shōwa Memorial Park is a government park in Tachikawa and Akishima that covers approximately 160 hectares (395 acres). It includes flower gardens, lakes, lawns, museums and sports facilities connected by a network of walking paths and cycling routes.
The park opened on October 26, 1983, to mark the 50th anniversary of Emperor Shōwa's reign. A memorial museum on the grounds displays personal items and documents from his life.
The Japanese garden within the grounds follows traditional design principles with ponds, stone bridges and carefully pruned pines. Many visitors come here to observe seasonal transitions, when cherry blossoms announce spring or maple trees change color in autumn.
Visitors can rent bicycles for approximately three hours to explore the wide grounds. Sports equipment is also available, and most areas are easily accessible by bike or on foot.
A cherry blossom garden in the northern section displays flowers that appear several days later than those in central Tokyo. This timing difference gives visitors an extra opportunity to experience the blooming season.
