Tsukui, dissolved municipality in Tsukui district, Kanagawa prefecture, Japan
Tsukui was a town in Tsukui District, Kanagawa Prefecture, that merged into Sagamihara City in 2007. The area is made up of wooded hills, rice fields, and scattered settlements connected by narrow rural roads.
Tsukui appears in records going back to the Kamakura period, when it was already a farming and crafts area. It remained a distinct administrative unit until 2007, when national reforms led to its merger with Sagamihara City.
The name Tsukui still appears on maps and local signs as a reminder of the area's past. Small family-run shops, inns, and local markets continue to reflect the slower rhythm of life that once defined this place.
The area can be explored on foot or by local transport, with rural roads passing through hills and rice fields. Those with extra time will find walking trails through the wooded parts of the territory.
The mayor of Shiroyama publicly opposed the planned merger in 2006, which led to a recall election against him. This kind of local resistance to administrative mergers was very rare in Japan at the time.
