Bōnotsu, Historic port in Minamisatsuma, Japan

The coastal area extends over 52 kilometers along the East China Sea, featuring characteristic rias formations with deep coastal indentations.

During the Nara period, the port gained importance when Chinese Buddhist monk Jianzhen landed here, marking a significant point in Japanese Buddhist history.

The port formed part of the Mitsu-Nanato system, serving as a central hub for maritime trade between Japan, China, and other Asian nations.

Visitors can explore the site through guided tours organized by the Yamabiko Association, which operates daily from 9:00 to 16:00 except Mondays.

The port maintained its status as one of Japan's three major ports alongside Annotsu and Hakata, as recorded in Ming Dynasty's military encyclopedia Wubei Zhi.
