Kanpirē Falls, Waterfall in Uehara, Japan

Kanpirē Falls is a tiered waterfall on Iriomote Island, in the Uehara area of Okinawa, Japan, where water slides down stepped rock faces into a pool below. The surrounding forest grows right up to the edge of the rocks, keeping the area shaded and cool even on warm days.

Iriomote Island only became easier to reach for outside visitors in the 1970s, when new infrastructure opened the island to wider travel. Before that, places like this waterfall were known mainly to the communities who had lived on the island for generations and moved through its forests as part of everyday life.

The name Kanpirē comes from the local Ryukyuan language and carries a spiritual weight that visitors can feel in the way the site is treated. People tend to move quietly here, and small offerings are sometimes left near the water's edge, reflecting a long-standing sense of reverence for this place.

The falls are reached by a trail through Iriomote's jungle, and sturdy footwear is a good idea since the path can be wet and slippery in places. Going in the morning tends to work well, both for light and for avoiding the busier periods later in the day.

Iriomote Island is home to the Iriomote wildcat, one of the rarest wild cats in the world, and the forest around the falls sits within its habitat. The cat is so rarely seen that most people who visit the island never spot one, making any sighting near the trail a genuinely memorable moment.
