Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura, Cultural theme park in Kinugawa Onsen, Japan.
Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura is a theme park in Kinugawa Onsen, Japan, that recreates a Japanese town from the 17th and 18th centuries. It includes several theater buildings, traditional houses, and entire streets with shops and craft workshops.
The park opened in April 1986 and shows daily life during the Edo period from 1603 to 1868. It spreads across a large site that serves both as an amusement park and as a filming location for historical productions.
Staff members wear historical costumes and speak in the manner of different social classes, from merchants to samurai warriors. These performances run through every encounter in the park and turn the visit into a living theater experience.
Regular buses connect Kinugawa Onsen Station to the park in about twenty minutes of travel time. The paths inside are clearly laid out, so visitors can find their way easily.
The facility houses film studios and large sets where production companies shoot historical television series and movies throughout the year. If you're lucky, you'll see cameras and light poles standing between the houses.
