Hinoyama Castle, Mountain fortress in Kitahiroshima, Japan.

The castle stands near the Gonokawa River headwaters, featuring stone walls, dry moats, and commanding views of mountain passes through the Chugoku range.

Kikkawa Motoharu, son of Mori Motonari, established this strategic stronghold around 1550 to defend against the Amago clan in the Sengoku period.

The remaining garden displays traditional Japanese landscaping elements, including an artificial pond, vertical rock banks, and carefully positioned stone formations.

Archaeological excavations between 1994 and 1998 uncovered building foundations, wells, and numerous artifacts from daily life during the castle's operation.

The site contains surviving elements of both the mountain fortress and the separate fortified residence of Kikkawa Motoharu at the base.
