Motoori Norinaga's former residence, Special Historic Site in Matsusaka, Japan

The residence maintains its traditional Japanese architectural elements, featuring wooden beams, sliding doors, and tatami-floored rooms spanning across multiple levels.

Built in 1691 by Ozu Sanshiemon Sadaharu, this house became the residence of Motoori Norinaga, where he lived from age 12 until his death in 1801.

The residence displays the scholarly environment of the Edo period, with spaces dedicated to literary studies, medical practice, and philosophical contemplation.

Visitors can access the residence near Matsusaka Castle, where exhibitions present artifacts and documents related to Motoori Norinaga's intellectual contributions.

Within these walls, Motoori Norinaga spent 35 years writing his masterwork Kojiki-den, analyzing Japan's oldest historical record through detailed commentaries.
