The Yokoi Teruko Fuji Museum of Art is a biographical art museum in the city of Fuji, Shizuoka, Japan, dedicated to the painter Teruko Yokoi. The rooms display paintings, photographs, and personal objects that together trace her development as an artist.
Teruko Yokoi was born in 1924 in Tsushima, Aichi, and began her career studying oil painting in Tokyo. The Fuji museum opened in 2008, a few years after a first museum dedicated to her opened in Ena, Gifu, in 2004.
Teruko Yokoi moved to San Francisco and then New York in the 1950s, where she studied with Hans Hofmann. That time abroad shaped her abstract style, which uses bold colors and open compositions.
The museum is small enough to visit comfortably in a couple of hours. It is worth checking opening times in advance, as they can vary.
Yokoi held over 80 solo exhibitions across different countries during her career, including shows at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor and galleries in Bern, Switzerland.
