Chikugo Regional Park, Regional park in Chikugo Shi, Japan
Chikugo Regional Park is a large green space in Fukuoka Prefecture, laid out along the Chikugo River with flat paved paths running through open meadows and wooded sections. The park borders neighboring green areas, forming a connected network of open land along the riverbank.
The land along the Chikugo River was shaped through large-scale river management works during the 20th century, aimed at controlling floods and protecting the surrounding farmland. This reshaping of the riverbanks eventually made way for the park as a public green space.
In spring, cherry blossom trees draw families and groups who gather to picnic beneath the branches, following a tradition deeply rooted in local life. This seasonal gathering is one of the most visible ways people in the region mark the turning of the year.
The paths are flat and well-marked, making the park easy to navigate for visitors of all ages. Weekends and public holidays tend to draw larger crowds, so a weekday visit offers a quieter experience.
The Chikugo River, along which the park runs, is the longest river on the island of Kyushu and has shaped the farming life of the surrounding plains for centuries. From parts of the park, visitors can still look out over the rice paddies that made this river so central to the region.
