Haneda Movable Bridge, Swing bridge in Ota, Japan
Haneda Movable Bridge crosses the Ebitori River with two separate sections designed to rotate horizontally and allow vessels to pass underneath. The structure features two independent decks engineered to move and clear passage for watercraft traffic.
Construction finished in 1990 and the bridge operated from 1990 to 1998 as part of the Metropolitan Expressway Haneda Line. It provided an alternative route to the underwater Haneda Tunnel that was being developed during that period.
The bridge sits along a historic route that connects various neighborhoods throughout Tokyo with waterfront areas. Visitors can see today how this location is part of a larger network of paths that locals and tourists use to explore the city.
The bridge is currently closed to traffic and not accessible for vehicle use. Plans are underway to reconstruct it into a three-lane structure, so conditions and access may change in the coming years.
Despite remaining unused for over 25 years, the bridge still shows its original split configuration with separated decks. This unusual design choice reveals the technical solution that was selected for the movable structure.
